As a cataclysmic fire consumed America, and left nothing but ash and no signs of hope, a father and son take the journey to find that hope, overcoming all means of adversity. Cormac McCarthy's despairing novel "The Road" , uses the demise of the protagonist to emphasize the bond between a father and son through a tragedy. While traveling to the south in search of hope, the father encounters a mental obstacle that constantly jeopardizes both of their survival, "..the right dreams for a man in peril were dreams of peril and all else was the call of languor and of death.." ( McCarthy 18). One is able to grasp the concept that mental illusions served as a stepping stone towards the coming of his demise. As both the time and journey progressed, calamities sequentially fell upon the father and son, in which caused tribulation, however, in order to press forward for survival, the protagonist used inspiration, "..that the boy was all that stood between him and death.." ( McCarthy 29). This displayed what kept the protagonist from his demise, in which causes one to observe the strength of their bond. Finally, as the story came to a closure, the protagonist's demise finally fell upon him, however, the strength of the between the father and son still remained, "..I'll take to you everyday , he whispered, and I wont forget, no matter what.." (McCarthy 286). Even though the protagonist's demise appeared, his established bond with his son persevered. In otherwise, one is able to comprehend that it emphasized the purpose of the work as a whole.
